What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that helps people process difficult memories and experiences that may still be affecting their thoughts, emotions, and physical responses.

When something overwhelming happens, the brain may not fully process the experience. Instead, the memory can remain “stuck,” continuing to trigger distress long after the event has passed.

EMDR therapy helps the brain safely reprocess these experiences so they no longer carry the same emotional intensity.

Through this process, many people are able to release the pain connected to past events, process emotions and body sensations that have been pushed aside, and move forward with more adaptable beliefs about themselves and the world.

How EMDR Therapy Helps

Many people seek EMDR therapy when past experiences continue to affect their present life.

You might benefit from EMDR therapy if you experience:

  • Persistent anxiety or emotional overwhelm

  • Distressing memories or flashbacks

  • A strong emotional reaction to certain triggers

  • Feelings of shame or self-blame connected to past events

  • Difficulty feeling safe or relaxed

  • A sense of being “stuck” in old patterns

EMDR therapy helps your brain process these experiences so they no longer trigger the same emotional or physical reactions.

Over time, many clients notice:

  • Less emotional intensity around painful memories

  • Greater emotional stability

  • Reduced anxiety and overwhelm

  • Improved self-confidence and self-understanding

  • A deeper sense of peace and clarity

What to Expect in EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy follows a structured process designed to support both safety and healing.

During sessions, we will:

  • Identify experiences or memories that may be contributing to current distress

  • Strengthen emotional resources and coping tools

  • Use gentle bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements) to help the brain process memories

  • Allow new insights and more adaptive beliefs to emerge

This process allows your brain to do what it was naturally designed to do: heal and integrate experiences in a healthier way.

Sessions move at a pace that respects your comfort and emotional readiness.
